Accessibility
The website and the app should work with a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom, and the system’s dark mode, reduced motion and contrast settings. This page says what is in place, what is checked on every change, and what is known not to work yet.
The website
The aim is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The site has not had an outside audit, so this is a goal, not a claim.
- Every page has a link to skip to its content, one main heading, its language set to English, and alt text on every picture (empty only for decoration).
- Everything works with the keyboard, with a visible outline on the link or button that has focus.
- Text contrast is at least 4.5 to 1 in both the light and the dark appearance, which follow your Mac’s setting.
- With Reduce motion turned on, nothing animates and screenshots don’t zoom as you scroll. Videos only play when you press Watch it play, and say what they show.
- With Increase contrast turned on, the screenshots switch to the app’s higher-contrast appearance.
- Every field on the licence pages has a label, and results and errors are announced to screen readers.
- No cookies, no tracking and no scripts from other sites.
The build checks the headings, skip links, language, alt text, field labels, focus outlines, reduced motion and contrast on every change (scripts/test-website.sh), and fails if one is missing.
The app
- It uses the Mac’s own controls, menus and keyboard shortcuts; every action is in the menu bar or a right-click menu.
- Icon-only buttons and sliders have names for VoiceOver, matching their tooltips, and the drum machine’s and melody’s mute and solo buttons say what they do and whether they are on.
- Reduce Motion stops the inspector’s animation, and Reduce Transparency or Increase Contrast gives floating panels a solid background.
Known gaps
- The map of sounds and the drum and melody grids are visual. Every sound on the map is also in the list, but drawing a pattern or a melody may need a pointer.
- Neither the site nor the app has been tested from start to finish with a screen reader by someone who relies on one.
Tell us
If something does not work for you, email [email protected] with the page or the part of the app, and what you use (for example VoiceOver, zoom or keyboard only). Every report is read.
