What’s new
What changed in each version, for musicians. The app shows the same notes before it updates, and the downloads stay on GitHub.

Clap Studio can now send samples to more than one kind of hardware. Each device it knows has its own Send to… entry, sidebar rows and send sheet with its own limits, and a device that does not read cue points never offers joined files. The ALM Squid Salmple works exactly as before. If you have another sampler that reads from a USB stick or SD card, you can describe it in a small file in Settings > Advanced > Devices, with no new version of the app needed.

Species identification is back, powered by BirdNET: field recordings are listened to with BirdNET+ V3.0, which knows 11,560 species (birds, but also insects, frogs, mammals and a few others), and the BirdNET Geomodel rules out species that do not live where a recording was made. Both are included in the app. Each species shows an icon for its kind, and a menu narrows the list to one kind. The results are the model's guesses, each with how sure it was. Recordings are listened to again once after updating.
-
The species section in a recording's properties now also shows after the app is opened, not only while it is indexing.
-
Clap Studio now has a free edition and a licence. The free edition holds up to 100 files in the library, samples and field recordings together, with every feature included. If your library is already bigger, it stays exactly as it is: every file keeps showing and playing, and nothing is deleted, hidden or changed. Only adding files past 100 needs a licence: EUR 19.99 excl. VAT (VAT is added at checkout, depending on your country), once, for up to 5 Macs and every future update. Buy one on the website, then choose Clap Studio > Enter Licence… or open the link in the purchase email. After activating once, the app never needs the internet for it. The status bar and Settings > Licence show how many of the 100 are used.
-
Updates, downloads, questions and problem reports now live on the new Clap Studio releases page on GitHub. Help > Ask a Question… and Report a Problem… open it. Older versions cannot find new updates: download this version from the website once, and the app keeps itself up to date from then on.
0.35.0
- A field recording's properties show where it was made as a pin on a small map under Recorded at, with the coordinates below. Click the map to open the place in Maps; click the coordinates to choose another place.
- Edit > Undo (Command-Z) and Redo now work in the drum machine and the melody too, in the same list as library changes: a step turned on by mistake, a note dragged to the wrong place, a removed track, a sound swap, a groove or a MIDI file can all be taken back. A whole drag or slider move is one step. Clear Steps, Remove All Tracks, Clear Notes and opening a MIDI file no longer ask first, since Undo brings everything back.
- Field recordings can have background noise taken out with DeepFilterNet3: choose Reduce Noise from the context menu or the Sample menu, or use the Noise reduction section of the inspector. The file is never changed; an Amount slider mixes the cleaned sound with the original, and previews, the drum machine, joins, Copy To and Squid exports use it. The network is made for speech, so birds, water and wind can be reduced too.
- Save the sounds you found to a collection: Save Sounds to Collection in the drum machine drawer (or File > Save Drum and Melody Sounds to Collection) keeps every sound loaded in the drum machine and the melody in a collection, a sub-collection or a new one. The folder button in the melody drawer saves the melody's sounds only. It is one undo step.
- In the melody, pick several notes (Shift-click, Shift-drag a box, or Option-Command-A for the whole track) and move them together: drag one, or press Up and Down (Shift for an octave). The Plays at box is gone; melodies you saved sound the same as before.
- Fixed melody notes at low pitches not sounding, and a noticeable delay when clicking low keys on the piano roll.
- Fixed the volume slider in the status bar not changing the drum machine or the melody. It now sets their overall level, and your setting is remembered between launches.
- The search box hint is shorter, so it is no longer cut off.
0.34.0
- Sending to a Squid with Same channel in following banks now replaces a channel that already holds a sample, and warns you which banks are replaced. Replaced samples are deleted, not moved to the Trash.
- A long list of warnings in the Send to Squid sheet scrolls under a Warnings title with a count, so the sheet keeps its shape.
- Sounds joined with the ALM Squid Salmple preset now have 0.1 seconds of silence between them instead of 0.25. Presets you saved keep their values.
- Fold, reorder and hide the sidebar sections (Filters, Collections, Categories, Moods, Tags, USB Drives and Folders). Right-click a section title or use the new Sidebar tab in Settings. Your choices are remembered.
0.33.0
- Group collections into sub-collections, one level deep. Right-click a collection and choose New Sub-collection. Picking a parent lists its own sounds and its children's. Deleting a parent asks first; files are never deleted, and undo brings everything back.
- Right-click a collection while a Squid drive is connected and choose Send to Squid Salmple. Sub-collections become banks of a new set; a plain collection becomes a Pool folder. Nothing is written if it will not fit.
- Choose the channel for each sound in the Send to Squid sheet, or send them to one channel across following banks.
- Join sounds as you send them to a Squid, using its limits for length and silence. Cue markers survive the copy.
- Name joined files in the Join sheet. Files are numbered Joined 01, Joined 02 and so on.
- The free-channel count on Squid banks is easier to read in dark mode.
0.32.0
- Newly joined files remember their source sounds. Once indexed, find them under Joined and expand a row to see and audition its sources in order. Older joined files cannot be linked automatically.
- Right-click an added folder and choose Rescan to check it for changes.
- Move through and preview sounds more smoothly with the arrow keys.
- Library filters and Add Folder no longer overlap other controls, and built-in effect sliders no longer show an extra line.
0.31.0
- Shape sounds with built-in amplifier, low-pass, high-pass, erosion and room effects. Combine them with VST3 plug-ins for auditions and bounces.
- Room reverb keeps its tail when decay changes during playback. Bounces keep the original samples untouched.
0.30.0
- Join selected sounds into WAV files with named cues, adjustable silence and length limits, saved presets, and an ALM Squid Salmple preset. Long sounds continue across files without losing audio; originals stay untouched.
- Audition Library and Map sounds through the Effects drawer. Playback starts sooner, and changes in a plug-in's editor can be heard while playing.
- Effect bounces remove unused silence while keeping quiet tails.
- Long melodies have more room in the piano roll while keeping sideways scrolling and playback follow.
0.29.0
- Publish app updates only when the version increases, avoiding repeat releases for ordinary changes to the repository.
- See a spinner and task description while an app update downloads and installs.
- Read release notes in the update dialog and a changelog with each version’s changes.
- Open a VST3 effect’s own editor, keeping presets and hidden settings for preview and bounce. Effects without a Mac editor keep parameter sliders.
- Plug-in crashes and hangs are contained in a separate process, with loading time limits and cancellation that closes the helper.
- The empty Effects panel is centered, and preview controls stay still while samples play.
0.28.0
- Build a chain of VST3 effects and preview or bounce copies of selected samples. Bypass, reorder, remove effects, and adjust their parameters.
- Keep trims and sound edits when bouncing, include effect tails, and protect original samples from being overwritten.
- Load effects that query inactive audio buses correctly.
